June 01, 2018 | Men's Tennis, Features
Brandon Holt, Jack Jaede, Riley Smith and Laurens Verboven have earned 2018 ITA All-America honors.
For the first time since 1993, USC men's tennis has landed multiple Trojan doubles pairs on the ITA All-America honor roll. It also was 25 years ago that USC last finished a season with more than three ITA All-Americans, as the Trojans boast four honorees for 2018 in Brandon Holt, Riley Smith, Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven. All but Holt are first-time All-Americans, with Holt adding 2018 singles and doubles All-American honors to his 2017 singles pick from his freshman campaign. Holt and Smith finished 2018 ranked as the No. 9 doubles team in the nation to secure their doubles All-American status, while Jaede and Verboven snagged their first All-American honors as a 5-8 seed in the NCAA Doubles draw as well as a No. 10 final ranking.
Now a three-time All-American, Brandon Holt secured his second singles selection as a 9-16 seed in his second appearance in the NCAA Singles draw. Holt also powered through to the NCAA Round of 16 and wraps his sophomore season ranked No. 12 in the nation in singles to reinforce his status as a 2018 ITA All-American in singles to go along with the doubles All-American honor he earned with teammate Riley Smith. Holt went 25-12 overall in singles this season, and Holt/Smith paired up for a 17-5 record together, which included a run to the NCAA Doubles Round of 16. A sophomore, Smith now boasts the first ITA All-American honor of his young Trojan career.
Also freshly crowned as first-time ITA All-Americans, juniors Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven combined forces as USC's winningest doubles duo in 2018. The pair climbed as high as No. 7 in the nation, going undefeated in the months of January and April and maxing out with a 10-match win streak that stretched into the NCAA Team Tournament. Jaede/Verboven finished the year ranked No. 10 in the nation and with a 30-8 overall record together.
USC's four ITA All-Americans is the most since 1993, when the Trojans had three doubles pairs earn All-American honors. That year, USC won the NCAA title, and Wayne Black, David Ekerot, Andras Lanyi, Jon Leach, Brian MacPhie and Kent Seton were named All-Americans to set a program record with six honorees.
