Girls Play LA Sports Day
May 30, 2018 | Trojan Outreach, Features
USC's Trojan Outreach program recently partnered with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation to host the second annual Girls Play LA event.
Girls Play LA is a program that helps girls in LA's underserved areas get involved in sports and live a healthy lifestyle, while making friends, building self-esteem and having fun.
During this year's event, members of USC's women's basketball and women's volleyball teams volunteered to coach approximately 500 local girls in a number of different sports. The girls played hockey, softball, basketball and volleyball and tried out track & field and rock climbing as well.
The girls were also treated to a keynote address from USC women's basketball alum Tina Thompson, who played in the WNBA, won two gold medals with the U.S. Olympic Team and was recently selected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Thompson encouraged the girls to try new sports and to take on leadership roles.
