Lopes & Richards Earn Spots At The NCAA T&F Championships

13 Trojans advance to NCAA event quarterfinals
Lyndsey Lopes qualified for the NCAA Championships in the women's high jump and Madisen Richards did the same in the women's long jump to highlight USC's first day at the 2018 NCAA West Regional hosted by Sacramento State in Sacramento, Calif. today (May 24). In addition, USC had 13 athletes advance to NCAA quarterfinal rounds tomorrow.
- Lyndsey Lopes qualified for the NCAA Championships in the women's high jump, but not without drama. She was in a three-way tie for 11th with the top 12 advancing, after clearing 5-8.75/1.75m in her first attempt and then missing at 5-10.75/1.80m. She then had a jump-off with two other jumpers. They all missed at 5-10.75, 5-10 and 5-9.25, before Lopes and one other jumper cleared 5-8.50/1.74m to advance to nationals, taking the final two spots. For Lopes, it is the second event in which he has qualified in for the NCAA Championships, as she already will be competing in the heptathlon.
- Madisen Richards qualified for the NCAA Championships in the women's long jump, finishing second overall with a best jump of 20-4.50/6.21m (+2.6w). She opened with a jump of 19-10.25/6.05m (+1.3), then jumped 20-2.50/6.16m (+0.3) in her second attempt before her final and best effort. Courtney Corrin finished 39th overall with a best jump of 18-8.50/5.70m (+2.0).
- Both Cameron Samuel and Rai Benjamin automatically advanced to the men's 400m hurdles quarterfinal tomorrow by finishing in the top three of their qualifying heat. First Cameron, placed second in the third heat with a time of 51.47 and then Benjamin won the final heat with a time of 50.12. Samuel was in a slower heat and had the 23rd-fastest time among the qualifiers, while Benjamin's time was second among the 24 runners advancing.
- Next, both Anna Cockrell and Shante Robinson automatically advanced to the women's 400m hurdles quarterfinal tomorrow. Cockrell won her heat and had the fastest time on the day of 56.87, while Robinson was third in the fourth heat with a PR of 58.23, which was seventh among the qualifiers.
- T.J. Brock had a PR of 10.19 (+1.3) to place third in his 100m heat and fifth overall to automatically advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal.
- Angie Annelus, Deanna Hill and TeeTee Terry all won their 100m dash heats to automatically advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal. Annelus won the third heat and was fourth overall with a PR of 11.28 (+1.2), Hill won the fifth heat and was second overall with a season-best wind-legal time of 11.22 (+1.1) and Terry won the sixth heat and was sixth overall with a time of 11.33 (+2.4w).
- Ricky Morgan Jr. and Michael Norman then automatically advanced to the men's 400m quarterfinal tomorrow. First, Morgan Jr. ran 46.41 to take second in his heat and seventh overall. Then, Norman won his heat and was sixth overall with a time of 46.36.
- Kendall Ellis and Kyra Constantine took care of business in the women's 400m dash, both qualifying automatically to tomorrow's quarterfinal. Ellis eased to victory in the first heat and was second overall with a time of 52.31. Constantine took second in the second heat and was 10th overall with a time of 53.08. Kaelin Roberts was a scratch due to a strained right knee.
- Robert Ford advanced to the men's 800m quarterfinal tomorrow by taking second in his heat with a time of 1:50.12 to automatically advance. His time was 13th-fastest among the qualifiers.
- Chloe Berry placed eighth in the second heat of the women's 1500m race with a time of 4:30.94. When the four heats were concluded, she finished 38th overall.
- Michael Gonzalez finished tied for 25th in the men's pole vault, with the top 12 advancing to nationals. He cleared 15-11.00/4.85m in his second attempt, but then missed on all three attempts at 16-4.75/5.00m.
- Breana Jemison placed 24th in the women's shot put with a best mark of 50-11.50/15.53m in the first round. She then had a foul in the second round and a throw of 50-10.25/15.50m in her final attempt.
- Nathan Bultman began the day for the Trojans in the men's hammer throw. He had a mark of 207-7 (63.27m) in his first attempt and then two fouls to finish 16th. Eight of the top 15 throwers in the West Region coming into the event did not advance.
