Gabby Smith Falls to No. 2 Player in the Country in NCAA First Round

Trojan senior and co-captain Gabby Smith wrapped up the 2018 season with a loss in the First Round of the NCAA Singles Championships at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C. today (May 23).
In the First Round match, No. 35 ranked Smith lost 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) to No. 2 ranked Makenna Jones of North Carolina.
After blasting through her first set to win 6-1, Smith lost the second set 6-4 to Jones. In the third set, Smith fell behind 1-4, but fought back to push ahead at 5-4. Jones would win the next two games to regain a 6-5 lead. Smith tied up the third set at 6-6 to force a tiebreak. Jones took a lead that Smith couldn't recover from and won the tiebreak and the match.
Gabby Smith closes out the 2018 season with a 23-14 record in singles and a 95-45 (.679) career singles record throughout her time at Troy.
Smith was a two-time All-Pac-12 First Team member (20017 and 2018) and was the 2018 Pac-12 Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She also was USC's female recipient of the Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship.
She was a 2016 ITA Doubles All-American with her partner Giuliana Olmos.
Majoring in accounting, Smith boasts a 3.493 cumulative GPA. She was accepted into BYU's Accountancy – Tax master's program and will begin her graduate studies in the fall.
