Gabby Smith Begins NCAA Singles Championship Play

Trojan senior and co-captain Gabby Smith travels to Winston-Salem, N.C. this week to compete for an NCAA individual title. Smith will be participating in the 2018 NCAA Singles Championship beginning tomorrow (May 23) at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex and will run through May 28. This will be Smith's second NCAA Individual Championship appearance as she made it to the Second Round in the 2017 Tournament.Â
The two-time All-Pac-12 First Team member and Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete is scheduled to take on the No. 2 seed Makenna Jones of North Carolina at 12 p.m. ET in the Round of 64.Â
Smith continues to remain the highest ranked Trojan in singles at the No. 35 spot. Smith is 23-13 on the season, with a 11-7 mark in dual-match play and went 5-3 in conference matches. She is the only Trojan on the roster to have at least 20 wins. Smith's season was highlighted by victories over five opponents ranked in the ITA Top 16 and three clinched matches. In every match she played, Smith competed at the No. 1 position for the Women of Troy.
In addition, Smith was named the Pac-12 Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognizing her on-court play as well as her stellar performance in the classroom.
Tar Heel opponent Jones is the No. 2 ranked singles player in the country. She is 34-4 this season, going 14-0 in ACC play and 24-2 in dual matches. Jones, is undefeated from the No. 1 position, where she predominately plays in dual matches. She has defeated three players ranked in the Top 10 this season.Â
