Trojans finish first 18 holes at 2-over.
Freshman Jennifer Chang fired a 6-under 66, USC's best round in almost two years, to lead the No. 5 USC women's golf team to first place after the first round of the Silverado Showdown on Sunday at the Silverado Resort in Napa, Calif., on Sunday (April 8).
Â
The Trojans, four-time winners this year including two in a row with the current lineup that features four freshmen starters and one sophomore, combined for a 2-over 290 in USC's final regular season tournament, good for a 2-stroke lead over Arizona and UCLA.
Â
USC was led by Chang, whose first round 66 was the Trojans' best since Gabriella Then posted a 7-under 65 during the 2016 Pac-12 Championships.
Â
Chang, who already has a pair of top 3 finishes in four collegiate starts, finished with a two-stroke lead thanks to a six-birdie effort buoyed by an eagle on 16. Starting on the 10th hole, she went out with a 5-under 31 and came back with a 1-under 35.
Â
Freshman Alyaa Abdulghany turned in a par 72 with four birdies on the day and is tied for seventh. Freshman Amelia Garvey carded a 3-over 75 to tie for 32nd, freshman Gabriella Ruffels finished at 5-over 77, tied for 51st, and sophomore Allisen Corpuz chalked up a 6-over 78, tied for 63rd. Sophomore Aiko Leong, playing individually, finished with a 12-over 84.
