Lopes in 3rd after Day 1 of Sam Adams Combined Events
Michael Gonzalez tied for second in the men's pole vault and Joy McArthur placed third in the Women's Premiere Hammer Throw to highlight the Trojans' action during the first day of the Sun Angel Classic held in Tempe, Ariz. today (April 6). In addition, Lyndsey Lopes is in third place after the first day's events in heptathlon at the Sam Adams Combined Events hosted by Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif.
- Gonzalez tied for second in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 16-4.75 (5.00m). He went out at 16-10.75 (5.15m) which would have been a PR and the highest clearance by a Trojan since 2010.
- McArthur got things started for USC at the Sun Angel Classic with a third-place finish in the Women's Premiere Hammer Throw. McArthur had a best mark of 196-5 (59.88m).
- Nathan Bultman placed sixth in the Men's Premiere Hammer Throw with a best mark of 199-11 (60.94m) in the final round. He opened with a mark of 199-10 and then had four fouls before his final and best throw.
- Jason Kim placed 14th in the men's open hammer throw with a best mark of 139-10 (42.62m).
- Lopes posted a first-day PR in the heptathlon of 3,460 points at the Sam Adams Combined Events, 176 more points than she has posted in her career during the first day of a heptathlon. She is 139 points behind the leader and 110 points out of second place. Lopes opened her day by taking second in the 100m hurdles with a PR of 13.58 (+0.3) to earn 1,039 points. She then tied for third in the high jump with a season-best clearance of 5-7.00 (1.70m) to earn 855 points. Lopes then had a PR of 36-0.00 (10.97m) in the shot put to take seventh in the event and earn 593 more points. She was in third place with 2,487 points entering the final event, 175 points behind the leader. Lopes saved her best for last, winning the 200m dash with a wind-legal PR of 24.08 (+1.0) to earn 973 points and close the gap on the leaders.
