April 28, 2018 | Women's Beach Volleyball, Features
The Women of Troy will move into the Contender’s Bracket for a second chance to play in the title match
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 2-seeded USC beach volleyball team (24-11) dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to top-seeded and No. 1-ranked UCLA (34-3) in the winner's bracket final of the 2018 Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championship at Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium on Saturday, April 28.
The Women of Troy had their five-match winning streak snapped and will now move into the Contender's Bracket to face either third-seeded California or sixth-seeded Washington at 1 p.m. PT today. The winner of that match will get a shot at the Bruins in the final.
The Bruins scored the first point in the dual as Mac May and Elise Zappia defeated USC's tandem of senior Jenna Belton and freshman Maja Kaiser, 21-16, 23-21, at the No. 4 position. In a barn-burner, the Trojans' fifth pair of freshman Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto completed a 12-21, 21-17, 15-12 win over Izzy Carey and Megan Muret to even the match at one-all.
UCLA went ahead once more with a win at court three. There, Savvy Simo and Madi Yeomans defeated sophomores Joy Dennis and Cammie Dorn, 21-19, 21-7, for the 2-1 lead in the dual. USC evened the dual once more when its top court won in three sets. Junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina pulled out the three-set win over Megan and Nicole McNamara, 21-13, 20-22, 15-9, for their 18th in a row and improved to 27-1 overall.
With the score tied at 12-all in the third, UCLA scored three straight to clinch the dual at the No. 2 position. Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil defeated senior Terese Cannon and Sammy Slater, 19-21, 21-19, 15-12, for the match and the dual.
The win improved the Bruins to 4-9 all-time against USC and is UCLA's fourth in the teams' last six meetings, all of which have ended in 3-2 decisions.
