April 27, 2018 | Football, Features
Jones goes to Buccaneers and Nwosu to Chargers in second round, Green to Seahawks in third round.
Three USC football players—junior tailback Ronald Jones II and senior outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu in the second round and junior defensive lineman Rasheem Green in the third round—were selected on the second day of the 2018 NFL Draft today (April 27).
Jones was chosen by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the 38th overall pick, Nwosu went to the Los Angeles Chargers with the 48th pick and Green was selected by the Seattle Seahawks as the 79th pick.
They are USC's 503rd, 504th and 505th NFL Draft picks, the most of any school. The Trojans have had a draftee every year since 1939.
Jones is USC's highest drafted running back since Reggie Bush went second overall in 2006. Over the past 30 years, 16 Trojan running backs have been drafted.
Jones ran for 3,619 yards with 39 TDs in his career, good for fifth on USC's prestigious all-time rushing chart. He had 14 career 100-yard rushing performances. He had back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, including in 2017 when he was an All-American and All-Pac-12 first teamer while running for 1,550 yards with 19 scores.
Nwosu is USC's highest drafted linebacker since Rey Maualuga was the 2009 Draft's 38th pick. He is the 24th USC linebacker drafted over the past 30 years. He also is the first Trojan drafted by the Chargers since Kevin Ellison in 2009.
Nwosu had 168 career tackles (including 20.5 for losses, with 12.5 sacks) while starting the past 2 seasons. He made 75 tackles (with 9.5 sacks) and 13 deflections in 2017 while earning All-American and All-Pac-12 first team acclaim and serving as a team captain.
Green is the first Trojan defensive end drafted since Leonard Williams in 2015. He also is the 16th Trojan defensive lineman drafted in the past 20 years. He becomes the first Trojan drafted by the Seahawks since Malcolm Smith in 2011.
Green, a 2017 All-Pac-12 first teamer, had 10 sacks among his 43 tackles last fall. The 2-year starter had 117 career tackles with 16.5 sacks.
Combined with USC redshirt sophomore quarterback Sam Darnold, who on Thursday (April 26) was the No. 3 pick of the Draft's first round by the New York Jets, this marks the first time since 2009 that USC has had 4 players selected among the top 79 picks. Darnold was USC's 81st first rounder, a national best.
