The USC women's tennis team will welcome three new Trojans, head coach Alison Swain announced today (April 17). Estella Jaeger, Danielle Willson and Alyssa Mayo will officially join the Women of Troy in the fall of 2018. They will join Salma Ewing who signed with USC in the fall of 2017.
Estella Jaeger, who signed her national letter of intent, hails from Delbrück, Germany where she prepped at ISP International School. Jaeger is well-versed in international competition since she began competing worldwide in 2015. She holds an ITF Junior Singles title in Switzerland, as well as two ITF Junior Doubles titles in Doha, Qatar and Oslo, Norway. She has been competing in professional tennis events since 2017.
"It was clear from Estella's resume that she is an accomplished tennis player ready to compete at the top of Division I tennis," said Swain. "Through our conversations and her visit, it became evident that Estella possesses the work ethic, team-focused attitude and competitive determination to add to our program and help us towards our future goals."
In addition to her ITF titles, Jaeger has advanced to the singles semifinals in multiple ITF events, achieving a high junior ITF ranking of 326. In November 2017, she competed in her first pro-circuit event where she advanced through three qualifying rounds to reach the main draw of a $15,000 event.
At the age of 15, Jaeger was the No. 1 ranked junior player in Germany. When she was 14, she was voted "Female Athlete of the Year" in Delbrück, Germany, when she helped her state win the 2014 German Team Championship title playing in the #1 position and going undefeated through the tournament. Jaeger also won the 2014 German Junior Doubles Championship, has twice been runner-up (2014, 2016) and twice finished in third place in the German Junior Singles Championships (2014, 2016).
Newport Beach, Calif. product Danielle Willson will arrive at Troy with a plethora of experience. According to TennisRecruiting.net, Willson is ranked in the Top 10 in the state of California and in the Top 50 nationally. She is the reigning CIF High School Singles Champion and her team at Corona del Mar High School holds the CIF Team Championship.
"Danielle is an outstanding player both nationally and in Southern California, and she has been on the rise as a player over the last 12 months," said Swain. "We love to bring in the top players from California, especially student-athletes like Danielle who have been able to compete in the top events nationally, play high school tennis and are outstanding students in the classroom."
Willson was the 2017 Orange County Register Girls Tennis Athlete of the Year and was recognized with the Sportsmanship Award at the Southern California Sectionals. After her 2016 season, she was awarded CIF All-American status.
In 2017, Willson earned two doubles titles at national level events. She also holds third and fourth place finishes at USTA national tournaments in singles. In addition, she has consistently reached the quarterfinals or better at National Level 2 and 3 USTA events.
Also joining the Women of Troy is Alyssa Mayo from Naples, Fla. The accomplished doubles player was a semifinalist at the ITA Summer Circuit Championships competing against current college players. She also won the doubles title at the 2017 USTA Girls 18's Georgia State Championships.
"Alyssa fell in love with USC and our tennis program when she first visited," said Swain. "She brings a wealth of international tennis experience, particularly in doubles, as well as a passion for training at the highest level and with other top athletes. Her commitment to playing in a team-environment and improving her own tennis stood out in the recruiting process."
In 2017, Mayo won the Galileo Grade 4 ITF doubles title and was a doubles runner-up at the El Salvador Grade 4 ITF. She also placed second in the 2015 Cope Sultana-Mayaguez Grade 4 event.
Mayo played tennis for Naples High School her freshman year where she was the 2015 Class 3A Florida State Singles Semifinalist and placed second in the state championship doubles tournament.
All three future Trojans will arrive in the fall of 2018 ready to contribute for the Women of Troy.
