No. 4 USC Tops No. 14 Stanford For Second Pac-12 North Victory

The Women of Troy completed a 2-0 first day in Seattle with a win over the Cardinal
SEATTLE – The fourth-ranked USC beach volleyball team (19-9) collected a hard-fought 3-2 victory over No. 14 Stanford (14-9) at the Pac-12 North Invitational on Alki Beach on Saturday, April 14. It was the second of two wins on the first day of the tournament.
The Trojans earned the first two dual points, but Stanford fought back to even the score before USC clinched the match with a three-set win at court four. At the top, junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina put together their 11th straight victory and their 20th overall by defeating Morgan Hentz and Amelia Smith, 21-16, 21-11.
USC went ahead by two points with a win at court three where senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater took down Kate Formico and Catherine Raquel in straight sets, 21-14, 21-15.
Stanford put its first point on the board from the No. 2 position where Courtney Bowen and Sunny Villapando earned a 21-16, 21-12 win over sophomores Joy Dennis and Cammie Dorn. The second Cardinal point was scored from the fifth court as Shannon Richardson and Blake Sharp upended the Trojans' senior duo of Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer, 21-16, 21-17.
With the dual on the line, freshman Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto shook off a 21-19 first-set loss to Payton Chang and Caitlin Keefe to even their match with a 21-14 win in the second. The pairs battled it out but the Trojan duo earned a 15-11 win in the third to sew up the dual for the Women of Troy.
In a non-counting match, freshman Maja Kaiser and junior Katrina Kernochan put together a 21-11, 21-16 win over Kat Anderson and Chelsea Red-Horse Mohl.
Up next, USC takes on No. 13 California (18-5) and Oregon (2-6) in two matches on Sunday (April 15) to conclude the North Invitational. The Trojans and the Golden Bears meet at 10 a.m. before the Women of Troy tangle with the Ducks at 1 p.m.
