The Women of Troy improved to 18-9 overall with a victory over tournament host Washington in the Pac-12 Invitational
SEATTLE – The fourth-ranked USC beach volleyball team (18-9) ended a three-match losing streak by defeating tournament host Washington (9-10) at Alki Beach to open their run at the Pac-12 North Invitational on Saturday, April 14.
Despite hotly contested battles at the top two courts, the Women of Troy claimed their third victory over the Huskies in as many meetings. USC fired the first shot from the fourth position where freshman Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto defeated Kara Bajema and Anna Crabtree, 21-11, 21-15. One spot up, senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater registered the same score to get a win over Carly DeHoog and Shayne McPherson for a 2-0 USC lead.
The clinching point came from the fifth court where senior Jenna Belton and freshman Maja Kaiser delivered the final blow with their 21-15, 23-21 win over Samantha Drechsel and Natalie Robinson. Washington pairs forced the top two courts into third sets.
At the top position, junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina took a 20-22, 21-14, 15-9 win over Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner. At court two, sophomores Joy Dennis and Cammie Dorn couldn't stop Destiny Julye and Courtney Schwan, who won, 18-21, 21-17, 15-9, to put the only Husky point on the board.
In a non-counting match, junior Katrina Kernochan and senior Jo Kremer defeated Emma Calle and Chloe Newton, 21-10, 21-11.
Up next, the Women of Troy take on No. 14 Stanford (14-9) at 2 p.m. PT. USC faces No. 13 California and Oregon in two matches on Sunday (April 15) to conclude the North Invitational.
