No. 4 USC Sweeps Saint Mary’s College in Malibu

The Women of Troy won their fifth straight dual with a sweep of the Gaels
MALIBU, Calif. – The fourth-ranked USC beach volleyball team (16-6) defeated Saint Mary's College (11-5) in a 5-0 sweep to open its run in the Pepperdine Invitational on Zuma Beach on Saturday, March 31. It was the Trojans' fifth straight victory and the seventh clean sweep of the season.
The Women of Troy scored their first point from court four where seniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer took down Lindsey Calvin and Kelsey Knudsen in two sets, 21-12, 21-12. The second point came from court two when senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater defeated Emily Bible and Lindsey Knudsen, 21-12, 21-16.
USC clinched the dual from court five with a 21-16, 21-12 win by junior Katrina Kernochan and senior Alexandra Poletto over Madi Wilkerson and Sienna Young. The next two matches went to three sets, but the Trojans prevailed for the 5-0 win.
At the top court, junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina took down Morgan Hughes and Payton Rund, 21-11, 17-21, 15-8. On court three, sophomore Joy Dennis and freshman Haley Hallgren cleared the first set with a 21-9 win over Sarah Chase and Mary Hernandez, but dropped a 21-17 decision to the Gaels in the second. Down, 14-11, in the third, Dennis and Hallgren fought on to score the final five points to complete the comeback for a 16-14 win.
Up next, the Trojans take on 16th-ranked Loyola Marymount (12-8) in their second dual at the Pepperdine Invitational at 12:30 p.m. PT. USC concludes the day with a matchup against top-ranked host Pepperdine (16-3) at approximately 1:40 p.m.
