March 25, 2018 | Women's Beach Volleyball, Features
The Women of Troy posted wins over No. 11 Arizona and No. 14 Stanford on Sunday
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – The fourth-ranked USC beach volleyball team (15-6) put a 4-0 weekend into the books with a 4-1 win over No. 11 Arizona (9-6) and a 5-0 sweep of 14th-ranked Stanford (11-5) at the Pac-12 South Invitational on Ocean Park Beach sand on Sunday, March 25. Only No. 2-ranked UCLA also went undefeated on the weekend to share top honors with the Women of Troy.
The Trojans' win over the Wildcats was their seventh in a row against Arizona. Despite only being the second all-time win against the Cardinal, USC's victory snapped an 11-match Stanford winning streak.
Junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina were named to the all-tournament team at the No. 1 position. Senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater were chosen to the all-tournament team at the No. 2 position. Both USC pairs went 4-0 on the weekend and were 8-0 in sets played. UCLA had three pairs go 4-0 at the other courts and chosen to the all-tournament team.
Bustamante and Graudina set the tone against the Wildcats with their 21-9 first-set win. The duo got off the sand first with a 21-9, 25-23 win over Natalie Anselmo and Olivia Macdonald. Cannon and Slater scored the next point before seniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer delivered the knockout blow from court four with their 13-21, 21-12, 15-9 win over Hailey Devlin and Stephany Purdue.
The courts went down in order in the Trojans' sweep of the Cardinal. Bustamante and Graudina gutted out a 21-18, 21-16 win over Kathryn Plummer and Sunny Villapando at the top court to get things started. Cannon and Slater took down Morgan Hentz and Amelia Smith, 21-18, 21-15, at the second court before sophomore Joy Dennis and freshman Haley Hallgren put up a 21-19, 21-17 win over Courtney Bowen and Kate Formico at the No. 3 position.
Belton and Kremer earned USC's fourth point over Stanford when they defeated Payton Chang and Catherine Raquel, 21-14, 21-16. The sweep was complete when sophomore Cammie Dorn and freshman Maja Kaiser combined to get a three-set win over Kat Anderson and Caitlin Keefe at court five, 17-21, 21-13, 15-8.
The Trojans have a full five-day week to prepare for their next tournament. USC heads to Malibu, Calif., for the second time this spring when it hits Zuma sand for the Pepperdine Invitational on Saturday, March 31. USC faces Saint Mary's College (10:10 a.m. PT), Loyola Marymount (12:30 p.m.), and host No. 1-ranked Pepperdine (1:40 p.m.) in a trio of duals.
