No. 3 USC Hits Hawai’i for Spring Break Battles

The Women of Troy will play five duals on Queen's Beach in the Outrigger Resorts Hawai'i Invitational
LOS ANGELES – No. 3-ranked USC (8-4) heads to Honolulu for five duals this weekend in the Outrigger Resorts Hawai'i Invitational. The Women of Troy will face No. 12 Grand Canyon (5-4), Nebraska (3-4) twice, and host No. 5-ranked Hawai'i (7-3) in two duals at Queen's Beach. The Trojans' four losses in the season's first three weeks is more than the three losses they had in the three previous seasons combined (2015-17), but one reasons for the lack of rhythm may be USC's shifting lineup. In 12 duals, due to injury and illness, the Trojans have employed 10 different lineups already. USC is 24-1 all-time against this weekend's foes.

SCOUTING REPORT: No. 12-ranked GSU (5-4) has already lost once to the Trojans: a 3-2 decision in Phoenix to open the season on Feb. 24. GCU has also faced Cal Poly, LSU, and Pepperdine this season; all common opponents with USC. Since that weekend when the Lopes went 0-4, they have won five straight including four 5-0 sweeps. USC is 4-0 all-time against GCU. The Cornhuskers (3-4) are also a repeat opponent this season for the Trojans. Nebraska's three wins have come against Benedictine University at Mesa, Missouri State, and Missouri Baptist. USC is 8-0 all-time against the Huskiers. The Rainbow Wahine (7-3) went 3-1 in last week's East Meets West Challenge and suffered its loss there to Florida State. UH's other two losses were each to UCLA, once at home and once in Los Angeles. USC is 12-1 all-time against the Wahine but have won eight straight since UH knocked the Trojans out of the 2014 AVCA championship.
POW-WOW: USC pairs have won the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week award 12 times since its inception in 2016. Abril Bustamante and Terese Cannon claimed the first award of 2018 on Feb. 27. In 2017, USC pairs claimed five of the eight awards. All-Americans Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes are owners of a record five Pac-12 POW awards. Seniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer became the first-ever No. 5 pair to win the honor on March 21, 2017.
LET'S GO STREAKING: USC set a new program record to close the 2016 season as winners of 30 consecutive matches. That streak carried into the 2017 campaign and reached 62 before a loss on April 28 in the Pac-12 Championship winner's bracket final. The 62 victories rank sixth among longest streaks in the history of USC athletics. All-Americans Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes won 103 straight matches as a pair between April 2, 2015 and April 8, 2017. During that incredible streak, the two Trojans lost just seven sets (only one in 2016 and one in 2017).
