February 24, 2018 | Women's Beach Volleyball, Features
Three matches went three sets apiece before the Trojans took down the Lopes in Phoenix
PHOENIX – The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (1-0) needed every last point in a hard-fought 3-2 win over No. 10 Grand Canyon (0-4) at GCU's Beach Volleyball Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 24. The season-opening win is the Trojans' 101st dual victory in their last 104 contests.
The Lopes fired the first shot when they took a win at the No. 5 position. Jessica Clark and Madi Relaz responded after dropping the first set to freshman Maja Kaiser and junior Katrina Kernochan, 22-20, to win the next two, 21-12, 15-8. In another three-set battle, seniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer pulled out a 17-21, 21-12, 15-10 win over Emily Reinking and Jamie Walsh at court four.
USC went ahead momentarily when junior Abril Bustamante and senior Terese Cannon teamed up to take down Katie Pyles and Molly Turner, 21-16, 21-16, at the top court. The Trojans' lead was short-lived as GCU fought back to knot the score at two-all when Bella Bauman and Taylor Jarzombek defeated USC's duo of sophomore Joy Dennis and junior Brianna Sizemore, 21-19, 30-28, at three.
With the dual on the line, USC's frosh tandem of Haley Hallgren and Sammy Slater put a 24-22 loss in the first set behind them and came back to defeat Jessica Stansfield and Hannah Towne, 22-24, 21-15, 15-11, and clinch the dual. In a non-counting match, freshman Peri Green and senior Alexandra Poletto claimed a 21-7, 21-13 win over Natalie Honzovicova and Olivia Unnasch.
The Trojans have a short window to rest before their dual with Arizona State (0-0) at the PERA Club in Tempe, Ariz., set for a 6 p.m. MT (5 p.m. PT) start tonight.
