No. 1 USC Claims 3-2 Win Over Arizona State in Tempe

The Women of Troy improved to 2-0 to conclude the first day of the 2018 season
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (2-0) defeated host Arizona State (0-1) in the first match of the Arizona State Invitational at the Pera Club on Saturday evening, Feb. 24. For the Women of Troy, it is their 102nd dual victory in 105 matches.
In a tight match at court five, ASU took the first dual point on a 21-19, 21-18 win by Kate Baldin and Samantha Plaster over USC's duo of freshman Peri Green and senior Alexandra Poletto. The Trojans' senior tandem of Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer fired back to knot the dual with a 21-18, 21-13 win at court four over Katie Cross and Cierra Flood.
USC pushed ahead with a win at the top court where junior Abril Bustamante and senior Terese Cannon defeated Kwyn Johnson and Mia Rivera, 21-9, 21-15. One court over, the Trojans clinched the dual on a 21-12, 21-14 victory by freshmen Haley Hallgren and Sammy Slater over Halle Harker and Kara Woodard.
With the dual decided, the Sun Devils added a second point from court three where Katelyn Carballo and Ellyson Lundberg took down USC sophomore Joy Dennis and junior Brianna Sizemore, 21-14, 16-21, 15-11, in three sets. In a non-counting match, sophomores Cammie Dorn and Lainy Thomas defeated Frances Giedraitis and Sydney Palmer, 21-14, 21-18.
The Women of Troy conclude the ASU Invitational with two matches tomorrow (Feb. 25). USC takes on Nebraska (1-2) at 9 a.m. MT (8 a.m. PT) and then faces No. 14 Cal Poly (3-1) at 1 p.m. MT (noon PT) at the Pera Club.
