Trojans Fall in Season Opener to Utah Valley
February 16, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team dropped its season opener to Utah Valley, 5-1, at home on Friday night in the first contest of a three-game series.
A three-run homer by the Wolverines' Jackson Overlund in the sixth proved to be the difference as USC posted four hits to Utah Valley's eight. The Trojans scored in the bottom of the sixth, but that was it for the home team on the night. Paul Estrada hit a triple in the fifth inning to get Utah Valley on the board first and the Wolverines would add a run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.
TOP PERFORMERS
"Early on we had some good at-bats," said Head Coach Dan Hubbs. "We got runners on in each of the first three innings. In the third we had a runner on and Lars smokes a ball to right that is caught and then Matthew Acosta just missed a home run. That could have changed the complexion of the game. We just didn't get anything consistently going after that. Their pitcher did a good job adjusting and incorporating the changeup from there and tossed a good game."
"Chris Clarke had a good start on the mound for the most part, there were just a few spots where he needs to clean it up," said Hubbs. "Estrada put a good swing on a ball and hit a triple, but Chris did a good job to work out of it after that. Then Overlund caught a hanger and hit it out. A couple big swings were the difference. Austin then did a good job in relief after that, we just weren't able to turn it around offensively."
COMING UP
The Trojans have two more games against Utah Valley this weekend, playing at 2 p.m. on Saturday and then 1 p.m. on Sunday.
