No. 6 Trojans Open NCAA Tournament With Dominant 6-0 Win

LOS ANGELES – The No. 2 USC women's soccer team blasted its way into the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, beating Long Beach State 6-0 in an opening round game at McAlister field.
USC moves to 16-2-2 with the win and will face either LSU or Boston in the second round. Those teams play on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT. Long Beach State ends its season at 12-6-3.
The Trojans got goals from six different players on the day, matching a season high with the half-dozen scores. USC took a 2-0 lead into the half after goals by transfers Natalie Jacobs and Alea Hyatt. Hyatt would go on to add two assists in the second half and Jacobs added one.
USC scored three goals in 10 minutes in the second half when Tara McKeown struck in the 54th minute, Leah Pruitt found the net in the 63rd minute and Savannah DeMelo followed less than a minute later, finishing a pass from Hyatt. Hailey Hite would cap the scoring with her first goal of the season in the 81st minute.
The shutout was the 14th of the year for USC, which has outscored opponents 54-10 so far. The Trojan defense allowed just eight shots all game, one in the first half, and needed just a save each from keepers Kaylie Collins and Mackenna Carmichael.
GOALS
21' – USC: Natalie Jacobs (assisted by Leah Pruitt) – Julia Bingham fired off a shot on the box that was saved by LBSU keeper Imani McDonald, but the rebound fell to Pruitt who immediately followed with a shot, only to have it saved off the line by a 49er defender. Jacobs was there for yet another rebound, this time heading it home for the first score of the game and her fifth of the season.
26' – USC: Alea Hyatt (assisted by Tara McKeown) – McKeown centered a pass to Hyatt fairly deep in the box that Hyatt popped up and controlled with her right foot, then followed with her left foot to drive it home off the bounce.
54' – USC: Tara McKeown (assisted by Natalie Jacobs) – Jacobs fought past a defender deep along the endline and into the box, then found McKeown, who poked it home inside the near post with one touch.
63' – USC: Leah Pruitt (assisted by Alea Hyatt, Savannah DeMelo) – DeMelo slid a pass out to the right side of the box for Hyatt, who immediately sent a cross into the box for Pruitt, who fired it home with one touch on the run.
64' – USC: Savannah DeMelo (assisted by Alea Hyatt) – Pruitt fired off another shot on the run less than a minute later that was saved by the 49er keeper, but the rebound fell to Hyatt, who quickly slid a pass to her left for DeMelo, setting her up for a strike inside the right post.
81' – USC: Hailey Hite (assisted by Ashley Soto) – Soto sent a cross into the box that Hite volleyed with one touch over the keeper and under the crossbar for her first goal of the season.
