LA's Best Health Fest

On Oct. 28, Trojan Outreach partnered with LA's BEST for a second year to host the annual citywide Family Health Festival inside USC's Galen Center.
LA's BEST was created in 1988 by Mayor Tom Bradley and LAUSD Superintendent Leonard Britton to address the lack of adequate adult supervision of elementary school children during the critical hours between 3 p.m and 6 p.m. Since its inception, corporate and private donors have been critical to the quality and range of activities they are able to offer at LA's BEST, including STEM, digital learning, arts, sports, fitness and healthy eating.
This year's Family Health Festival hosted just shy of 2,000 students and families from LAUSD elementary schools who received access to resources to help them lead a healthy life. The majority of the students in attendance are recipients of LAUSD's free and reduced lunch program.
Students sampled healthy snacks, became active by playing games in various game stations alongside the men's basketball team, received free medical and dental health screenings and engaged in hands-on activities designed to promote an awareness of healthy lifestyles.
USC strength and conditioning coach Keith Belton, also known as Coach Thump to students and faculty, teamed up with men's basketball to kick off the event with stretching and warm-up exercises to hype up the crowd and prepare them for an exciting and active day.
The Health Festival also featured chef and Food Network Personality Monti Carlo, who led an informative workshop for parents, presenting tips on examining nutritional values in grocery items and what foods to avoid. One lucky parent won a $100 gift card to a local grocery market.
Once students and their parents were done receiving their free lunches and snacks, they were surprised with free tickets to the USC women's volleyball match against Cal. For many of the students in attendance, it was their first time on USC's campus as well as their first collegiate sports game. Eight-year old Beverly mentioned how she "enjoyed watching a big game at USC and giving them high-fives before the game."
