No. 1 USC Wins 10th Straight In 15-5 Victory At UC Irvine
November 04, 2018 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Trojans silence the Anteaters in the second to take control in Irvine.
IRVINE, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC men's water polo team turned the tide on a tight game by issuing five unanswered goals in the second period to take over on the road on the way to a 15-5 final decision over No. 11 host UC Irvine today at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. USC improves to 27-1 overall with today's nonconference victory.
UC Irvine drew first blood with an early goal before USC leveled it and then took the lead as Hannes Daube's equalizer was followed by a counter strike from Sawyer Rhodes off a pass from goalie Sam Krutonog. While Krutonog piled up 11 saves in the game, USC's offense got in a groove as well. The Trojans rattled off five goals in the second period to craft a 7-1 halftime advantage. Marko Vavic tallied two of his final three goals during that five-goal surge, with Rhodes notching his second and captains Marin Dasic and Zach D'Sa both joining the scoresheet in the first-half rally.
Daniel Leong made it a six-goal surge with a goal out of the gates of the third period before UC Irvine broke its silence with back-to-back goals to make it an 8-3 margin. Four USC goals would follow. Dasic delivered his second, and three new USC scorers — Jake Ehrhardt, Luke Wyatt and Sam Slobodien — got on the board to manufacture a 12-3 lead entering the fourth. In the final stretch, the Anteaters were able to get two more goals to go, only to see USC's Vavic and Wyatt add to their tally before freshman Alexander Lansill topped things off for a final 15-5 USC decision.
USC now turns to its final regular-season game of the year. In a battle that will likely determine the top seed for the coming MPSF Tournament, the Trojans will host rival UCLA in a Crosstown Splashdown at 3 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 10) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The game will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
The Trojans are also slated to host the 2018 MPSF Tournament, which will run Nov. 16-18 at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. For more information, visit the Tournament Central page at https://usctrojans.com/feature/2018-mpsf-m-water-polo-championship-central
