CARSON, Calif. – The No. 2 USC women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 6 UCLA on Friday night at StubHub Center, falling 3-2 in the second overtime.
USC falls to 15-2-2 overall and 8-2-1 in Pac-12 play, while UCLA moves to 14-3-1, 9-2-0. The Trojans will await their seeding and matchup for the NCAA Tournament on Monday.
In a back-and-forth thriller, the Trojans struck first, when Savannah DeMelo got USC on the board in the 36th minute. The Trojans took the advantage into the second half, before Julia Hernandez get a pass up the middle and finished a shot in the box.
The teams then treated the 8,555 fans in StubHub Center to an NCAA record-tying two goals in six seconds, when in the 87th minute Penelope Hocking knocked home a shot off a nice give-and-go from Alea Hyatt, and then Hailie Mace equalized almost immediately with a rocket from outside the box.
It would be the Bruin's Olivia Athens in the 105th minute who would end it, heading a ball off the bounce in the box.
Both teams will likely have national seeds in the NCAA Tournament and will find out what those are at 1:30 p.m. on Monday during the NCAA selection show.
GOALS
