LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC men's water polo team picked up its 25th win of 2018 with a power move against No. 5 Pacific, surrendering just one first-half goal en route to a 10-5 win in home waters today at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. While goalie Nic Porter made seven saves in the cage, the Trojans turned away the Tigers with numerous steals and field blocks. On the offensive end, Hannes Daube and Jacob Mercep issued a hat trick apiece as USC improved to 25-1 overall on the victory.
USC opened up a 2-0 advantage with some staunch defense and a couple searing scores from Daube and Mercep. In the second USC edged ahead 3-0 on a fake-and-fire from Jake Ehrhardt before Pacific got on the board with a counterattack finish to make it 3-1 by halftime. In the second half, the game opened up on the offensive ends, USC piled up four goals in the third as Marko Vavic and Sawyer Rhodes joined the scoresheet for the Trojan cause, and Daube and Mercep added to their counts. Pacific punched in a couple skippers and converted on a power play, making it 7-4 Trojans entering the fourth. USC tore off three straight goals in that frame, as Mercep and Daube hit hat tricks around a sling from Marin Dasic to go up 10-4 before Pacific got a backhand to go to make it 10-5. Porter would put a stop to back-to-back Tiger tries in the final stretch to lock away USC's 25th victory of the year.
USC's next action brings California to town for a televised MPSF matchup next week. On Saturday (Nov. 3) at 1 p.m., the Trojans and Golden Bears face off in a Pac-12 Networks broadcasted game at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. On Sunday (Nov. 4), USC will hit the road for a clash at UC Irvine at 1 p.m.
