Stubbs Homers Highlight Fall Action Against SDSU
October 28, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team hosted its first of two fall dates on Sunday, playing to a win and tie in a pair of seven-inning contests against San Diego State.
The Trojans won the opener 3-2 courtesy of a walk-off home run by CJ Stubbs, and then played to a 5-5 tie in the second game. USC will play its second and final fall game on the road on Saturday when the Trojans head to the University of San Diego.
Stubbs followed his walk-off homer with a solo-shot in the first inning of the second game, before sitting down for the day. Stubbs, who is coming off of Tommy John surgery which sidelined him for the entire 2018 season, was 2-for-4 on the day with a pair of homers and one walk.
The Trojans scored their other two runs in the opener on an error in the fifth inning to take the lead. The Aztecs would tie it up in the top of the seventh before Stubbs' homer in the bottom half of the inning.
Alex Cornwell got the start in the opener and tossed 3.0 innings, allowing just an unearned run. Chris Clarke followed with 3.0 scoreless innings in which he gave up just one hit and struck out two. Gus Culpo allowed the lone earned run in the seventh, but ended the inning with a spectacular snag on the mound to prevent further damage and set up Stubbs to secure the win for him.
The Trojans would follow Stubbs' homer in the first inning of the second game with a two-run single by Chase Bushor, in which a third run came around to score on an error, giving USC the early 4-0 lead. The Trojans tacked on a fifth run courtesy of a passed ball in the third inning.
SDSU would get a two-run double from Jared Fein in the fifth inning, and then load the bases and score three runs in the sixth to tie things up.
Freshman Carson Lambert got the start in the second game and tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out three batters and walking one, while giving up two hits.
John Thomas and Emilio Rosas each had singles in the opener, and Preston Hartsell and Clay Owens singled in the late game.
