Penelope Hocking Earns Weekly Accolades
October 23, 2018 | Women's Soccer, Features
LOS ANGELES – USC women's soccer forward Penelope Hocking earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors and was named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week after leading the No. 2 Trojans to a pair of 5-0 wins over Oregon and Oregon State.
Hocking started the week with a pair of goals against Oregon State for the first multi-goal game of her career, and then topped that with the first hat trick of the season by a Trojan, netting three goals against Oregon on Sunday.
Hocking's five goals gave her the team lead for the year with 12 and made the freshman the 13th player in program history to score at least 10 goals in a season. Her 12 goals match Morgan Andrews' 2015 total for the fourth best single-season mark in program history, and Hocking is just the second freshman in Trojan history to score at least 12 goals. Isabelle Harvey set the program record with 20 goals as a freshman in 1996.
Hocking is now tied for the Pac-12 lead in goals and is tied for second in the conference in points with 28 total. She is one of two Pac-12 players this season to net a hat trick and is the first Trojan to do so since Katie Johnson in 2016 (Oct. 2 vs. Oregon State).
Hocking is the third Trojan to pick up Pac-12 weekly honors this season, after Kaylie Collins was named Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 4 and Leah Pruitt earned offensive honors last week. Hocking is also the fourth Trojan to earn Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week honors after Ally Prisock was named to the team twice, and Savannah DeMelo and Pruitt once. USC is 14-1-1 overall on the year and 7-1 in Pac-12 play, tied atop the conference standings with 21 points.
