October 12, 2018 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Trojans get a good team win to start tournament play in Palo Alto.
PALO ALTO, CALIF. — The No. 3 USC men's water polo team churned out a 20-6 opening win at the Mountain Pacific Invitational today, topping Air Force in a well-rounded effort to carry its winning form into tomorrow's action. Now 19-1 overall, the Trojans will close out group play in battling for a semifinal spot when they face Long Beach State at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Oct. 13) at Avery Aquatic Center in Palo Alto. A win tomorrow morning would put USC into a 2:40 p.m. semifinal that afternoon.
USC tacked up the first three goals of the game and gripped a 6-2 lead after eight minutes of action thanks to five different scorers in that first frame. Junior captain Matt Maier tallied two early ones to get himself on a path to an eventual hat trick on the day. USC's balanced attack continued. By halftime, Sawyer Rhodes was the only other Trojan with two goals as eight USC players combined forces for a 10-4 advantage at the break. Out of the gates of the third, Maier had his hat trick in place. Soon after, Rhodes did the same, as the USC offense continued to click. The Trojans carried a 15-6 lead into the fourth, where Vaios Vlahotasios took over the cage for freshman goalie Sam Krutonog, who put in three periods of work. In the final frame, Air Force would be rendered scoreless, while four new USC scorers got on the scoresheet in closing out a 20-6 final win for the Trojans.
