Hannes Daube Scores A Second MPSF Newcomer of the Week Selection
October 01, 2018 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Freshman has won the award twice in USC’s run of four consecutive Newcomer picks.
USC freshman Hannes Daube has secured his second MPSF Newcomer of the Week award, stretching the Trojans' streak of claiming the conference honor to four consecutive weeks. Daube was the first to win it, back on Sept. 10, with fellow freshmen Sam Krutonog and Nic Porter following suit.
After being sidelined for four games, Daube returned to the pool on Sunday and scored a game-high four goals in three periods to help USC to a dominant 16-2 win over No. 5 UC Santa Barbara. He also added two assists and had a steal, and won the one opening sprint he took in the game. Daube's first goal opened the Trojans' account in the game, and he'd later pour out three more during USC's 11-goal scoring surge that put the Gauchos well out of reach. The win over UC Santa Barbara was USC's 17th straight win of the year.
Daube and the Trojans get right back to work this week, heading north for their MPSF opener at No. 3 Stanford at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 6) in Palo Alto. The game is slated to be broadcast on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Bay Area. After that, USC returns home to host San José State at 12 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 7) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
