Clemson Defeats USC on First Day of ITA Kick Off Weekend

The USC women's tennis team fell to the Clemson Tigers 4-2 to open ITA Kick Off Weekend at the Carolina Tennis Center in Columbia S.C. on Friday (Jan. 26). With the loss, the Women of Troy move to 2-2 on the season.

The Women of Troy started off the match strong in doubles. Trojan duo Gabby Smith/Becca Weissmann defeated Clemson's Gorches/Riley 6-2 on court two. Over on court three, USC's pair of Constance Branstine/Madison Westby beat Tiger tandem Miller-Krasilnikov/Schroeder 6-2 to claim the doubles point for Troy.

USC wanted to roll over the doubles momentum into singles, but the Tigers came back fighting. Clemson took the first singles point as Fernanda Navarro beat USC's Angela Kulikov 6-1, 6-0 on court four. Then Clemson's Daniela Ruiz defeated USC's Alexa Corcoleotes 6-3, 6-1 on court six.

The Trojans continued to battle as Becca Weissmann took down her Tiger opponent Sydney Riley 6-1, 6-0 on court two to tie up the overall score at 2-2. Clemson would have the final word by claiming the last two points of the match as Tate Schroeder beat No. 85 Madison Westby 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 and USC's No. 35 Gabby Smith fell to Clemson's No. 20 Marie Leduc 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Depending on the outcome of today's second match, the Trojans will either face Oklahoma or South Carolina tomorrow (Jan. 27). The Women of Troy are 2-0 against both Oklahoma and South Carolina.
