January 27, 2018 | Women's Tennis, Features
The Women of Troy defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 4-0 today (Jan. 27) on the second day of ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbia, S.C. With the victory, USC improves to 3-2 on the season, and they continued to remain undefeated against the Sooners with an all-time record of 3-0.
Â
Just like the previous day, the Trojans started off strong in doubles. Trojan tandem Constance Branstine/Madison Westby defeated Oklahoma's Miller/Stripp 6-2 on court three. Shortly after on court two, USC duo Gabby Smith/Becca Weissmann beat Sooner pair Miyazaki/Romero 6-3 to claim the doubles point for Troy.
Â
USC entered the singles portion of the competition with a 1-0 advantage. Trojan Becca Weissmann kicked off singles on the right note as she defeated Oklahoma's Simran Kaur Sethi 6-2, 6-1 on court two. USC's No. 85 Madison Westby notched another point for the Trojans as she beat Sooner Christina Brigante 6-3, 6-3 on court three. The Trojans only needed one more point to seal the deal.
Â
That final point would come from court one as USC's No. 35 Gabby Smith upset Oklahoma's No. 14 Lily Miyazaki 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Trojans.
Â
USC's next action will take them to San Diego where they will take on the San Diego State Aztecs on Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. The Trojans are 43-4 all-time in their series with the Aztecs.Â
