USC beats Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Redlands at the Inland Empire Classic.
REDLANDS, CALIF. — The No. 2 USC men's water polo team heated up for two more wins today, pulling double duty out at the Inland Empire Classic in Redlands, Calif. The Trojans peeled out to a 12-0 lead against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and then tallied the first eight goals of the matchup against Redlands to exert control in both games today. By day's end, USC had posted a 20-1 victory over the Stags and a 16-5 win over the host Bulldogs to bulk up the Trojans' 2017 record to 5-0 overall.
Bryce Hoerman was the first to double up on his scoring count today, taking a 7-0 USC lead on goals from seven different Trojans to tally his second and make it an 8-0 lead on the Stags. Murphy Slater and Zach D'Sa would join the scoring party by halftime, building a 10-0 USC advantage at the break on the hands of nine different USC scorers. By the final buzzer, the USC defense had surrendered just a single goals, with goalies McQuin Baron and Will Rubschlager sharing time in the cage. Thirteen different Trojans would score in the win, led by hat tricks by D'Sa and Matteo Morelli and a pair apiece from Hoerman, Blake Edwards and Matt Maier.
After a couple hours' break, the Trojans splashed back down to take on host Redlands. There, Morelli would strike twice during a USC surge to an 8-0 advantage. A 5-meter penalty shot from the Bulldogs broke up the run before Hoerman sizzled in a score before halftime to make it a 9-1 USC lead. Simon Wu would step into the cage for the second half to spell Baron as USC remained in control. Marko Vavic would deliver a hat trick in the third period of play while D'Sa finished off his second hat trick of the day during that same frame. D'Sa's third goal took the Trojans to a 15-3 lead entering the final frame as USC set up for the final push to an eventual 16-5 victory over Redlands to wrap the day's work.
USC's next action takes the Trojans to Davis, Calif., next week for four games at the Aggie Roundup. There, USC faces Cal Baptist at 9 a.m. and MIT at 12 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 16). On Sunday (Sept. 17), USC will take on Santa Clara at 12 p.m. and Long Beach State at 3:30 p.m.
