2017 Fall Camp #7: Notes
August 07, 2017 | Football, Trojan Athletic Fund, USC Ripsit Blog, Features
After enjoying a Sunday off from practice, USC football got back to it today with a light session on Howard Jones Field.
- USC head coach Clay Helton noted that tight TEs Daniel Imatorbhebhe (hip flexor), Tyler Petite (concussion protocol) and Josh Falo (knee) should be back in action by USC's mock game week (two weeks before Western Michigan), and explained that their absence has given fellow TEs Cary Angeline and Erik Krommenhoek a chance to shine.
- After reviewing tape from Saturday's full-pads practice, Helton identified linebackers Uchenna Nwosu and Connor Murphy as standouts.
- Helton explained that day's practice would be typical of a Monday game-week practice: 50 minutes to an hour long, focusing on situational play.
- Much has been made of USC's offensive line this camp, and Helton seems to gain more clarity on his starting five every day. Redshirt junior Chris Brown is "doing a nice job" at left guard, but "Roy [Hemsley] is pushing him" according to Helton. "With those two kids, I think we've got tremendous depth right there at that left guard position," he said. "Would not have an issue with any of those two kids playing in a ballgame right now."
- Helton also explained that he hopes USC's younger offensive linemen, particularly freshmen Austin Jackson and Andrew Vorhees, can start contributing valuable playing time by the fourth game of the season vs. Cal.
- Freshman QB Jack Sears is battling redshirt freshman Matt Fink to back up Sam Darnold this season. Helton noted that Fink, who arrived in the spring of 2016, is benefiting from his past experience, but that Sears is "further along in the process than I thought he would be."
- The Trojans are back in full pads tomorrow.
