"Blended" with Porter Gustin
August 03, 2017 | Football, Trojan Athletic Fund, USC Ripsit Blog, Features
Porter Gustin is one scary dude.
Since arriving at USC as a freshman in 2015, the 6-foot-5 linebacker has filled out his frame with a mountain of muscle, and has grown out a mane of blonde hair, plus a beard, to make him look even burlier.
When Gustin became passionate about transforming his body, he found it difficult to consume the amount of food he needed to bulk up. One day he had an idea, and he's never looked back.
"Drinking's easier than eating, and it's a lot faster," Gustin said. "I noticed that with drinking shakes, but shakes don't have everything you want -- they don't have real food. So I thought, 'Why not just blend up real food and drink it?'"
For over a year now, Gustin has been blending full meals on the regular: burrito bowls, eggs, potatoes and other proteins and vegetables -- always with a helping of cold water to make it go down easier.
According to Gustin, the key to a tasty shake is simple ingredients without bold flavors or sauces. His favorite is chicken, broccoli and carrots, though he acknowledges that he still struggles to drink them from time to time.
"Some of them I'll do and I'll still gag," he said. "But for the most part I'm pretty solid with it."
Gustin said the tactic is worth it for him, because it's helped him put on "better pounds" by losing the weight he doesn't want while adding muscle.
