Heading into the 2017 USC football season, there's a palpable buzz surrounding QB Sam Darnold and the Trojan offense. But USC's defense is bound to be impressive as well.
According to Pro Football Focus, USC has the top two returning edge defenders in the Pac-12.
Rising junior OLB Porter Gustin led the conference with 36 defensive stops in 2016, while rising senior OLB Uchenna Nwosu was second, with 33. Pro Football Focus defines a stop as a tackle that results in a "win" for the defense.
All in all, Gustin posted 68 tackles in 2016, including a team-high 13 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks. On the opposite end of the front seven, Nwosu netted 53 tackles, 7.5 for loss, 3 sacks and a forced fumble in 2016.
Gustin and Nwosu helped lead a unit that ranked third in the Pac-12 in total defense and fifth in scoring defense in 2016.
