2017 Fall Camp #13: Notes

The Trojans enjoyed a light Monday practice as they inch closer to their season opener on Sept. 2.

- USC head coach Clay Helton confirmed that there were no injuries in today's or Saturday's practice, and that redshirt sophomore TE Daniel Imatorbhebhe (hip flexor) is about a week away from returning to the field.
- After watching film on Saturday's scrimmage, Helton explained that "there were a bunch of good things that happened on the interior part of the offensive line that really showed up," and called the line "extremely deep."
- On the rest of the offense's struggles on Saturday, Helton explained that the young guys are still learning a big playbook. "As we dwindle down this playbook next week, I think that's going to help those young kids a lot."
- Despite their inexperience, Helton praised many of his young receivers, especially Joseph Lewis IV (pictured), who made a nice catch during Saturday's scrimmage. "He's one of the kids that is producing physicality, not only on offense, but he's going to be a kid that can really help us on special teams also," Helton said. "He's an offensive kid that really has a defensive mentality, which helps."
- On the flip side, Helton said he can see his defense's experience "across the board," between third-year DBs Iman Marshall and Marvell Tell III, senior safety Chris Hawkins, who's "like a 25-year-old pro out here," and more.
- Helton singled out senior LB Uchenna Nwosu and junior LBs Cameron Smith and Porter Gustin as the leaders of the defense, along with Hawkins in the secondary.
- The Trojans head to the L.A. Memorial Coliseum tomorrow for a practice in full pads.
