Trojans Wrap Up In Russia At FINA Super Final
June 26, 2017 | Men's Water Polo
With USC reps on both squads, Team USA finishes fourth and Australia takes seventh.
Four Trojans were in action in Reza, Russia, for the FINA World League Super Finals, where eight countries fought through six days of tight competition. When the waters finally calmed, Team USA — with Trojans McQuin Baron, Thomas Dunstan and Marko Vavic on the roster — finished fourth in the tournament. Their USC teammate, Lachlan Edwards, was capped up for Australia, which finished seventh at the event.
All four Trojans were key contributors for their nations. Incoming Trojan Marko Vavic notched five goals for Team USA, including a pair in the quarterfinals to help the United States top host Russia and move into the semifinals. In the semis, Thomas Dunstan hammered home a big goal for the USA, while goalie McQuin Baron racked up 17 saves in the cage. Dunstan would finish up with four goals tallied for Team USA, and Baron accumulated 51 saves across his six appearances in goal. For the Aussies, Trojan Lachlan Edwards punched up a pair of goals in Australia's victory over Japan in the seventh-place game.
Both countries will now turn to preparation for the coming 2017 FINA World Championships, which fields 16 men's and 16 women's water polo teams and is set to run July 17-30 in Budapest, Hungary.
