Defending National Champs Earn No. 3 Seed Into 2017 NCAA Tournament
November 06, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
Trojans will host Eastern Washington in the NCAA First Round on Saturday at McAlister Field.
The defending national champions are locked in for their fourth straight NCAA appearance under head coach Keidane McAlpine after securing a No. 3Â seed into the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championships bracket. The only Pac-12 program to win two NCAA women's soccer titles (2007 and 2016), the Trojans will open up their 2017 postseason push as host of an NCAA First Round game this week.
At 12 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 11), USC (14-3-1) will host Big Sky Conference champion Eastern Washington (16-5-1) at McAlister Field to kick off the tourney. Tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for seniors, students with an ID and children ($5 tickets only available at the gate).
This is USC's 16th trip to the NCAA Tournament, where the Trojans have posted a 19-11-5Â record with two NCAA championship runs, two third-round appearances and six second-round finishes.
This year, under the direction of fourth-year head coach McAlpine, the 2017 Trojans hold the same number of total wins at the close of the regular season as they did last year en route to the 2016 title. Thirteen different Trojans have scored goals to date, led by senior Alex Anthony (seven goals) and junior Leah Pruitt (five goals). Freshmen Savannah DeMelo and Tara McKeown lead the team with five assists apiece, while McKeown and Anthony have provided three game-winners each. Defensively, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kaylie Collins has anchored seven of USC's eight shutouts. With six shutouts in Pac-12 action, the 2017 Trojans have matched the program-best shutout tally in conference play. USC finished tied for second place in the Pac-12 this season, holding an 8-2-1 mark. With just three regular-season losses, the Trojans match the fewest such losses in program history.Â
Last year, USC was a No. 2 seed and hosted the first four rounds of NCAA competition before heading to the NCAA College Cup in San José and winning it all for the second time in program history.
