Baylor Advances Over USC On Penalty Kicks In NCAA Second Round
November 17, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
The defending champs suffer a heartbreaking result in College Station.
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS — The No. 3 seeded USC women's soccer team was 16 seconds away from victory in the NCAA Second Round when Baylor pulled even in finishing off a rebound in the box. USC dominated in overtime and slammed the crossbar on multiple occasions, but could not break through, bringing up penalty kicks to decide which team would advance in the tournament. There, Baylor prevailed, ending the defending NCAA champs' 2017 campaign with the Trojans holding a 15-3-2 overall record.
"First and foremost, I have to say congratulations to a Baylor team that showed great fortitude in coming back that late in the game and then finding a way to end it in the penalties," USC head coach Keidane McAlpine said. "This is disappointing for our group because I thought throughout the game we were probably the better team. We had plenty of chances to win the game and end the game and we just had to see out 16 seconds. That is disappointing, but I have to give a lot of credit to our senior class. Four years ago, when we got on campus, the program was not in a great space and then they came in and were willing to just believe in the process. They just helped us change the program — from the title last year to establishing ourselves this year as one of the top teams in a year where most people did not think we could get it done. I am extremely disappointed for them but at the same time extremely proud of them and the legacy they have left."
USC would out-shoot the Bears 7-2 in the first half of action as the Trojans worked to create opportunities and earn corner kicks only to see Baylor prove up to the Trojans' tests. The stalemate stretched through to the 72nd minute, where — after Baylor's keeper turned away a couple solid USC opportunities — the Trojans finally broke through. Erika Okuma would launch the ball into the box from the left side, finding the eager head of Leah Pruitt for a powerful header that ripped into the back of the net and took the Trojans to a 1-0 advantage. As time ticked down, USC looked to have the win in hand, but Baylor found a moment of magic in the waning seconds. After USC goalkeeper Kaylie Collins tipped a dangerous Baylor shot off the crossbar, another Bear was able to reel in the rebound and pounce on the chaotic opportunity in the box, hammering in the equalizer with just 16 seconds left in regulation. The score would hold, and the teams were on their way into overtime.Â
The first OT passed largely without much danger at either end, but in the second 10-minute stretch the Trojans were clearly on the hunt for the winner. The crossbar, however, seemed to have different plans for USC tonight. After a Nicole Molen header was blocked, Savannah DeMelo zipped in a good-looking shot that caromed off the crossbar and was deemed to be hauled in by the Baylor goalkeeper before it crossed the goal line. In the 108th minute, Pruitt sent a laser on frame. That, too, would be denied by the crossbar, leaving USC just millimeters away from a golden goal. Instead, time would drain and penalty kicks would be called for to decide the advancing team. The Bears struck first for a 1-0 lead, then saw Baylor notch a save on USC's opening chance. Baylor went high on its next try, but USC's ensuing PK zipped just wide. Next, Baylor slotted another shot to hold a 2-0 advantage, and USC's third shot was saved once again. Baylor was able to put away its fourth PK to secure things, 3-0, and steal away a spot in the NCAA Third Round.
