Trojan senior is finishing off her master’s degree while leading the defending NCAA champs.
With her team solidly locked into the nation's top-10, USC senior forward Alex Anthony has secured a top-10 spot for herself as one of 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award. USC's goal scoring leader this season with five goals to date, Anthony is a driving force for the No. 6-ranked Trojans. But she doesn't only stand out on the pitch; she's been hard at work off the field as a graduate student and active member of the community. See below for Anthony's Senior CLASS bio, and stay tuned to the Trojans' 2017 campaign as Anthony and her Trojans (11-1-1) take aim at defending their 2016 NCAA Championship as the postseason looms on the horizon.
Classroom
Alex Anthony finished her undergraduate coursework in just three years from the University of Maryland, College Park, where she was a double major in sociology and psychology. She was a member of the dean's list, a Senior Marshall, part of the Academic All-Big Ten Team, a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and a member of the Phi Eta Sigma honors society and UMD Honors College with an impressive 3.895 GPA.Â
At USC she is working on her Master's of Public Policy, working as a research assistant in the Center for Risk & Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE). The center works in conjunction with the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security, aiming to improve the nation's security. In her position she analyzes and researches existing literature, completes data/acquisition and performs project management across a range of projects dealing with the economic impact of terrorism events and natural disaster events.
She also spent 2015 working as an intern for U.S. Senator Michael Bennet of Denver, Colo., managing and directing the front desk, helping teach new interns and acting as the office representative at various meetings. Anthony researched and analyzed information concerning statewide unemployment causes and rates in order to help policy change. She also helped organize five statewide DACA/DAPA events, with more than 100 people in attendance.
Character
A member of USC's leadership committee for the soccer team, Anthony is a person of high moral character and a great role model both on and off the field for her younger teammates.
Community
Anthony has been active in the community, as she was the president of the UMD chapter of The Grassroot Project, a DI varsity athlete nonprofit organization that serves to educate at-risk youth in Washington, D.C., about HIV/AIDSÂ awareness and prevention through lessons and grades. She coordinated with senior administration to organize and schedule programs in more than 20 area schools and conducted bi-annual training for new coaches.Â
She is also the co-founder of The One Ball Humanitarian Effort, which sent soccer balls to U.S. Marine troops in Afghanistan in order to build trust among U.S. soldiers and Afghani citizens. She organized membership efforts with five soccer clubs across Colorado, collecting more than 300 balls to ship to Afghanistan along with ball pumps, cones, cleats and first aid kits.Â
Also, her work with U.S. Senator Michael Bennet helped the greater community of her hometown of Denver, Colo., as the duties included facilitating Latino outreach and event organization regarding DACA/DAPA policy.Â
Anthony has also been involved with charitable efforts with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Special Olympics, Sam Sandos Christmas Baskets and the Xtreme Soccer Camp.
Competition
Anthony is a standout on the field as well, as she was a member of USC's National Championship squad in 2016, tying for the team lead with 10 goals while earning All-Pac-12 Second Team honors. She came to USC after competing for two seasons at Maryland. In 2015 as a redshirt sophomore, she started all 19 games, finished tied for second in the Big Ten with 10 goals. She broke the Maryland single-season record and led the Big Ten with 91 shots. This season she is tied for the team lead with two goals through four games played as the team is 3-1, as of the nomination deadline.
