Madison Westby Wins Pac-12 Player of the Week
April 20, 2015 | Women's Tennis
USC freshman Madison Westby made a heroic match-clinching comeback against rival UCLA last week, facing match point in the second set, forcing a second-set tiebreaker, fighting off an injury sustained during that tiebreaker to win it, and then wrapping it all up with victory in the third set to clinch the match for the Trojans. Her efforts have secured her a second selection as the Pac-12 Player of the Week.
In last week's rivalry matchup against the Bruins, #78 Westby's 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-4 comeback upset win over UCLA's #28 Kyle McPhillips capped off a roaring come-from-behind victory for the Women of Troy, who had trailed 3-0 in the match before battling out four straight singles wins. The 4-3 victory also secured an undefeated Pac-12 season for the Trojans, who are the outright conference champions for the second time in the past three seasons. USC is now 21-2 overall to go with its 10-0 Pac-12 finish. Westby has now won six consecutive singles matches to hold a 22-7 overall record in her first season as a Trojan.
The Pac-12 champs will now divide and conquer as they set up for individual action at the Pac-12 Championships this week in Ojai, Calif. Singles and doubles competition will run April 22-26.
