Baron and Chung Named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week

LOS ANGELES – Water polo goalie McQuin Baron and women's golfer Karen Chung were named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 29 – Oct. 4, on Monday, Oct. 5.
USC CREDIT UNION MEN'S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
McQuin Baron led the No. 3 Trojans with a stalwart effort in goal to upend No. 2 Stanford 12-8 in overtime. Against the Cardinal, the sophomore goalie tallied five crucial saves in overtime as the USC offense powered in four goals to break away from Stanford and avenge the Trojans' only loss of the season in dramatic fashion. Overall, Baron finished with a career-high 18 saves in the statement victory.
Against San Jose State, Baron totaled eight saves in just over two periods of play as USC went on to win 17-3 over the Spartans. Following the two victories, USC is now 12-1 overall and 3-0 in MPSF play. The Trojans are next scheduled to compete in the Kap7 SoCal Invitational, beginning with San Jose State on Saturday (Oct. 10) at 10:40 a.m. at Pepperdine.
Also nominated for men's student-athlete of the week: Reed Malone (swimming).
USC CREDIT UNION WOMEN'S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Karen Chung dominated the field of play to lead the No. 2-ranked Women of Troy to the Annika Intercollegiate title. Chung finished the tournament at 12-under 204 (68-68-68) to claim the individual title and help place USC at 36-under 828 (276-271-281), which was 23 strokes better than second-place Arizona (851).
Chung's score is the second-lowest 54-hole total in school history surpassing her previous personal record of 11-under to win the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in March. Among the junior's record performance, she recorded four birdies and one eagle from 180 yards out on the final day of competition to secure the top spot on the leaderboard. Following the victory, Chung was also awarded with Pac-12 Player of the Month. Up next, the Women of Troy travel to Chicago, Ill. to compete at the Windy City Invitational on Monday (Oct. 5) and Tuesday (Oct. 6).
Also nominated for women's student-athlete of the week: Samantha Bricio (volleyball), Morgan Andrews (soccer) and Katerina Berdousi (cross country).
The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Alec Koondel.
