No. 17 Michigan women's tennis team, led by No. 1 singles player Emina Bektas, moved a step closer to its sixth straight NCAA round of 16 appearance with a first-round win over Fresno State, 4-0, on Friday (May 9) at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Wolverines improved to 22-4 while the Bulldogs, in their first NCAA appearance since 2011, fell to 16-9. Michigan will play the winner of USC-Idaho on Saturday.
Michigan got off to a quick start with doubles wins on courts 2 and 3. Ronit Yurovsky and Laura Ucros dispatched of Anne Susdorf and Tanya Murtagh, 8-2, on court 3 for a quick edge as courts 1 and 2 tightened up. Court 2 ended the suspense as Sarah Lee and Amy Zhu took care of Rana Sherif Ahmed and Sofya Malysheva, 8-5, to clinch the doubles win.
Bektas, ranked No. 9, won the first singles match on court 1, defeating No. 72 Sophie Watts, 6-3, 6-1. Yurovsky, on court 2, made it 3-0 Michigan with another 6-3, 6-1 win over Ahmed.
With the Wolverines leading on three of the remaining four courts, Ucros made it official with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court 6 over Murtagh.
