Women of Troy Punch Through NCAA Singles Opening Round

ATHENS, CALIF. -- USC women's tennis got out of the gates at the NCAA Individual Championships with a bang, sparking their singles runs with victories today in Athens, Ga. Both Giuliana Olmos and Zoë Scandalis drummed up solid straight-set wins in their respective Round of 64 matches to advance to tomorrow's Round of 32 action.
Ranked #60 in the nation, Giuliana Olmos was up against South Florida's #71 Loreta Alonso in her morning Round of 64 match. Olmos came to play, grabbing a break in both sets to stay in control for a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Playing in her first NCAA Singles draw, Olmos will next square off against #11 Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary's, who comes in as a 9-16 seed. Olmos will also take to the courts in doubles tomorrow alongside teammate Zoë Scandalis - also a singles winner today for the Trojans.
Scandalis - ranked #19 in the nation - faced off against Duke senior Hanna Mar. The #36 Mar was ready for action in taking an early 3-1 lead over Scandalis, but the Trojan kicked into gear soon after. Scandalis powered into the lead with four straight games won to go up 5-3 in the first set, holding strong to take that first and then roll right along through the next to register a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mar and move on. Scandalis will face top-seeded Jamie Loeb of UNC in tomorrow's singles Round of 32.
In doubles play tomorrow, Olmos and Scandalis are teamed up against No. 4 seed Jansen/Routliffe of Alabama. The Trojans also have Brynn Boren and Zoë Katz paired up for doubles action. Boren/Katz take on 5-8 seeded Elbaba/Pierson of Virginia.
