USC's Amy Rodriguez is on the hunt for a second Olympic gold medal after Team USA topped Canada in a dramatic women's soccer semifinal today (Aug. 6) in London. The see-saw semifinal saw the teams trade leads and extend into overtime, where the United States scored a stoppage-time goal to net the 4-3 win and launch into the gold-medal match against Japan at 11:45 a.m. PT on Aug. 9.
An All-American at USC, Rodriguez competed for the Women of Troy from 2005-2008. In her junior season, Rodriguez helped power USC to its first-ever NCAA Championship, as the Trojans won the 2007 title. The following year, Rodriguez had been called up the U.S. ladder to make her Olympic debut. She would go on to serve up the assist on the game-winning goal in the gold-medal game. Most recently, Rodriguez scored the game-winner herself in a 2-1 USA win over Canada in Team USA's 2012 Olympic Send-off Game.
Rodriguez had appeared in Team USA's first four games of the 2012 Olympic Games before today's semifinal, in which the U.S. squad was embroiled in battle with the Canadians throughout. By overtime, Team USA had utilized all its substitutions. The tense victory sets up a rematch of the 2010 Women's World Cup final, where Japan beat the United States.
