USC's Amy Rodriguez has helped yet another team into a championship match, as the Trojan now sets up for the WPS final with the Philadelphia Independence. It was a goal from Rodriguez that helped secure a 2-0 win by the Independence over magicJack in the semifinals last weekend. Now, Rodriguez and her pro teammates enter their second straight WPS final, facing Western New York Flash on August 27 at 4 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net.
Rodriguez, a 2007 NCAA Champion at USC, followed up that history-making run with the Trojans with a trip to the 2008 Olympic Games, where she won gold with Team USA. Just last month, Rodriguez and the U.S. women finished second at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup. Now, Rodriguez has an eye on helping the Philadelphia Independence win its first WPS crown this weekend. The Independence fell in last season's final to FC Gold Pride.
Rodriguez's 2011 season with the Independence has been interrupted by her U.S. National Team commitments, but the Trojan has punched in three goals in her 11 games to date. She was one of the WPS top scorers in 2010, tallying 12 goals in 23 games with the Independence
In October 2010, Rodriguez became one of just 38 U.S. players to reach at least 50 caps in her career. Soon after, she scored the game-winning goal that clinched Team USA's qualification in the 2011 World Cup. Before becoming an Olympic gold-medalist in 2008, Rodriguez established herself as an All-American at USC, helping the Women of Troy become the only Pac-12 team to win a women's soccer NCAA Championship with that run to the 2007 title. Rodriguez also stands out as USC's No. 4 all-time scorer with 31 career goals as a Trojan, and also ranks No. 2 in career game-winning goals with 12 along with No. 4 in career points (79) and No. 6 in career assists (17).
