USC Starts Weekend With 6-2 Win Over Washington State

LOS ANGELES - Junior right-hander Andrew Triggs (Nashville, Tenn.) struck out a career-high 13 batters Friday as the USC Trojans opened a Pac-10 Conference series with the 6-2 win over the Washington State Cougars. Triggs went 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits with two walks to surpass his previous career best of 10 strikeouts, set earlier this season.
Kevin Roundtree went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Ricky Oropesa clubbed his seventh homer of the season, adding two RBI for USC (25-29, 13-12). Nate Blackham, Derek Jones and Patrick Claussen had two hits each for Washington State (24-28, 8-17).
Oropesa's solo homer in the second put the Trojans ahead and built a 4-0 lead after five innings. Jason Monda's sacrifice fly put the Cougars on the board in the sixth, but an RBI squeeze bunt by J.R. Aguirre and Roundtree's single pushed the Trojan advantage to 6-1 after six innings.
The series continues tomorrow at 2 p.m. with a noon start in the season finale. Both games will be broadcast on usctrojans.com.
