IRVINE, Calif. - Christian Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBI Tuesday as the UC Irvine Anteaters beat the USC Trojans, 9-2, in a non-conference game at Anteater Ballpark. The Anteaters banged out 14 hits on the evening as the UCI pitching staff held the Trojans to two runs in the second inning.
Andy Lines got credit for the win for UC Irvine (35-13) with 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Six Anteater batters recorded two hits with Jordan Leyland and Drew Hillman registering two RBI apiece. Brandon Garcia took the loss for USC (20-28) after giving up five runs in 2 1/3 innings.
D.J. Crumlich led off the Irvine first with a walk and scored on Sean Madigan's double down the third base line. Hillman hit a sacrifice fly to left for the 2-0 Anteater lead. The Trojans responded with two runs to tie in the second. Matt Foat and James Roberts singled with Foat later scoring on a wild pitch and Kevin Swick hitting an RBI double to left.
The Anteaters opened the third with three straight singles off Garcia by Crumlich, Madigan and Brian Hernandez. Hillman then hit his second sacrifice fly on the night before Ramirez belted a two-run triple to right as UC Irvine took the lead for good. UCI opened the fifth with another three straight singles, followed by a two-run single from Ramirez. Leyland added a two-run double for good measure as part of the four-run fifth with the Anteater staff retiring the final 10 Trojan batters in order to sweep the two-game season series.
