No. 2 USC Men Advance To NCAA Second Round

LOS ANGELES - Defending back-to-back national champions USC got off to a good start on their quest for a three-peat Friday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium. The No. 2 ranked men's tennis team, fueled by an overwhelming showing in singles play, notched a 4-0 victory over Sacramento State in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Team Championships.
Doubles play began with a bang as the team of Steve Johnson and Emilio Gomez made quick work of Smith/Malko, 8-0 on court two. The No. 22 tandem of Jaak Poldma and JT Sundling had trouble getting started and never found their stride as they fell to Harbatsiuk/Starcevic 8-3 on center court. USC managed to lock down the doubles point as Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento teamed up to defeat Millan/Lorentzen 8-3 in the No. three slot.
USC surged into singles action and never looked back, rattling off three quick wins to seal victory for Troy. No. 47 Ray Sarmiento got things started as he took down Javier Millan 6-2, 6-1 on court four. Seconds later, No. 44 Daniel Nguyen closed out Marko Starcevic 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 3 spot.
With Sacramento State on the ropes, the Trojans wasted no time slamming the door on the competition. No. 1 Steve Johnson capped a day of stellar play as he defeated No. 29 Kiryl Harbatsiuk 6-1, 6-2 on center court.
USC will play No. 31 San Diego, who defeated BYU in the day's other contest, Saturday at 12 p.m. at Marks Stadium in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Team Championship.
