No. 2 USC Men Cruise To NCAA Round Of 16

LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 USC men's tennis team took another step towards a third straight NCAA title Saturday afternoon at Marks Stadium, as they defeated No. 31 San Diego 4-0 to advance to face No. 15 seed Georgia Tech in the Round of 16 on Thursday (May 19) in Palo Alto, Calif. The Trojans secured the doubles point to start the day and followed up with three consecutive singles wins to send the Toreros packing. USC improves to 23-2 on the season.
After a tough loss on Friday, the No. 22 team of Jaak Poldma and JT Sundling rebounded with a strong 8-3 win over No. 16 Jackson/Pohlmann on court one. Steve Johnson and Emilio Gomez then locked things up for the Trojans with an 8-4 win over Bubnic/Schive from the No. 2 slot.
The Men of Troy entered singles action firing on all cylinders and it was only a matter of time before victory belonged to USC.
Peter Lucassen dominated his competition as he rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Abdullah Hashem on court six. No. 44 Daniel Nguyen then continued his recent hot streak as he dispatched No. 120 Nikola Bubnic 6-2, 6-2 from court three. With one point left to decide the match for the Trojans, Emilio Gomez picked apart Thibaut Visy 6-1, 6-3 from the No. 5 slot.
In other action, No. 1 Steve Johnson, No. 38 Jaak Poldma and No. 47 Ray Sarmiento were all engaged in fiercely competitive matches when USC sealed the victory.
The Trojans return to action May 19 as the NCAA Team Championship Round of 16 moves to Palo Alto, Calif.
