Track and field athletes Cara Bickers and Zara Lukens were both awarded $10,000 from USC as Renaissance Scholars, an academic honor that is awarded to select undergraduate students who graduate with a major and a minor (or two majors) in widely separated fields of study. Bickers and Lukens was awarded the scholarship for finishing in the top 10 of the 329 Renaissance Scholars that will be recognized at next month's commencement.
Bickers is a Biological Sciences major and a Classics minor at USC with a 3.901 GPA. The senior competes for the USC track and field team in the long and triple jump. Bicker's season-best in the long jump is 16-11.25 and in the triple jump is 34-8.50.
Lukens is an International Relations and Neuroscience major and a Spanish minor at USC with a 3.928 GPA. She was captain on the USC cross country team this Fall and runs the 10000m race in track and field. Last night (April 14) at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., the senior established a new personal best with a time of 37:11.02 which ranks sixth all-time by a Trojan female.
In addition, each year at the Student Recognition Ceremony, USC recognizes graduating students who have excelled both inside and outside the classroom, and have made a significant difference through their leadership, volunteering, and community engagement efforts. These are undergraduate, graduate, and professional students whose presence and notable contributions have enriched the quality of life on campus and in the local, national and international community.
In all, nine USC student-athletes will receive a student-recognition award for completing a major and a minor, or a double major, in two disparate fields with a 3.5 GPA or better. That list of athletes is: James Krumpholz (men's water polo), Dina Hegazy (women's swimming), Joelle Bekhazi (women's water polo), Kevin Little (men's swimming), Jaak Poldma (men's tennis), Katherine McFetridge (women's crew), Bo DeHuff (men's golf), Karter Haug (women's soccer) and Bickers (track and field). Bickers is the only athlete to receive the student-recognition award and a Renaissance Scholarship award.
