Hammer Competition Kicks Off Trojan Invitational

The USC hammer throw team kicked off the 2011 Trojan Invitational in style today (March 18) at Mt. SAC in Walnut, Calif. and with four athletes setting PRs, including Marissa Minderler increasing her standing on USC's all-time list.
The women's competition began at 10 a.m. and USC's Minderler posted the best collegiate throw on the day with a new PR of 205-4 (62.60m). That throw moved her from eighth to fifth on the USC women's all-time hammer throw list. The current Trojan team has three of the top 10 marks with Lauren Chambers ranking fourth, Minderler fifth and Jenny Ozorai eighth. USC's all-time leader Eva Orban competed unattached and won today's competition.
Ashley Pyka also had a PR with a throw of 161-4 (49.18m), eight and one-half feet farther than her previous career best mark. Stephanie Hoffer had a throw of 118-5 (36.09m) which was also a PR.
Other Trojan female throwers included Jenny Ozorai (188-10), Tamara Baumann (172-4), Kathryn Daniels (142-1) and Farren Benjamin (127-2).
Trey Henderson continued winning every men's hammer throw competition he has entered this season, taking today's title with a mark of 223-4 (68.08m).
Eric Stein posted a PR with a throw of 176-5 (53.78m), nearly 14 feet better than his previous career-best throw.
Complete results will be available Saturday at the conclusion of the Trojan Invitational. The Trojan Invitational will be held tomorrow at Loker Stadium on the USC campus from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
